A Simple Way of Saying Complicated Things: Create Your Own Style with Retro-Inspired Pieces from Target
“Style is a simple way of saying complicated things.” Jean Cocteau
Fashion is what you buy. Style is what you do with it. Creating your own unique style is all about choosing pieces you love and putting them together in a way that allows you show a little bit about who you are without even having to speak.
It shows respect and proper etiquette to present your self to the world in the most positive way you can. It’s not about going shopping and buying new things and making sure you try every trend that comes along. It’s about feeling perfectly groomed and dressed so you can forget that part of you. The more parts of you that you forget, the more you will be able to focus on others. That’s when your true charm can shine through.
Find this adorable yet career appropriate ‘Polka-Dot Wrap Dress’ here.
This versatile handbag with optional cross body strap can be found here.
I was at my local Target just the other day and amazed by the retro-inspired pieces that had just arrived! This polka-dot wrap dress is the perfect piece for any occasion. It is a great length for work, brunch, or an evening out. I love that it has long sleeves, making it easy to style for any type of weather.
Although the wrap dress has become almost synonymous with Diane Von Furstenberg and the 1970’s, this popular silhouette was around several decades prior, and continues to be a favorite in women’s closets today.
In the 1930s designer Charles James, after designing garments that verged on obscene, created the the first version of the wrap dress. It was a rather clinging sheath that “spiraled” around the body, either connecting at the hip with a clasp or zipping across the torso. It gained attention with its sophisticated air and other designers such as Elsa Schiaparelli and Clare MsCardell designed their own versions and they were all very popular.
Although Furstenberg did not actually invent the wrap dress, she definitely perfected it by adding details such as a v-neck, a sash or belt that ties at the waist rather than clips or buttons, and by using a flattering stretch jersey material.
This wrap dress, which is currently available in every size at Target, has all of the things that Furstenberg added to the design, allowing a woman to look both feminine and professional by combining beauty, practicality and also a very affordable price!
When dressing in mostly black, or even black and white, it’s easy and fun to add interest and more personal style to an outfit with a textured, colorful coat and some bright, unique accessories. Texture can be used as a subtle form of patterning and will give an outfit richness and visual depth.
I love the soft plushness of this gorgeous coat, which is the most perfect shade of pink, and can be found at Target. Because your coat is what’s seen most often when you are out in the world it should be a reflection of your inner style. Find one in a texture you absolutely love in your favorite color and it will add so much flair to all the other clothes that are already in your closet!
Most of the fun accessories seen in this outfit are from Target and linked in the photo captions. My shoes are from Jadams and can be found in several colors here. All makeup is from Urban Decay.
Jannine Maynard of Meraki Salon in Johnston colored and styled my hair and I could not be more grateful for her constant kindness and never failing hairdresser magic!
Thank you so much for visiting the blog today. I hope you found it worthwhile and I truly appreciate your time and attention.
I hope it inspires you to express yourself by sharing your style in your own unique way.
Yours truly,
Jennifer
