The Ultimate Kit for Young Scientists: Go on a Field Trip at Home with Ms. Frizzle!
“If you keep an open mind, you never know who might walk in.” Ms. Frizzle
Do you remember the zany but wonderful teacher Ms. Frizzle, who taught us to take chances, make mistakes, and get messy? I’ve enjoyed sharing The Magic School Bus books series, starring Ms. Frizzle, with my school children and own ‘home’ children for years!
When my son and I opened the box, we decided to pretend that Ms. Frizzle walked right in and said, “Let’s go on a field trip!”
My son was amazed at the huge assortment of materials that came in the kit. We were unpacking and unpacking and unpacking some more when we found a really cool Data Notebook. We also found a set of 28 Activity Cards that explained what everything in the kit was and the directions for SO many experiments!
We were eager to get started but realized there were some super important steps to follow. First of all, we read the activity cards that showed us exactly what every supply in the kit was, allowed us to ‘meet the class,’ and told us the the important message about safety while using the kit.
We also paid close attention to the cards that had Ms. Frizzle explaining what weather is, and the importance of the Data Notebook.
Finally, we were ready to begin, however there were SO many experiments to chose from it was hard to decide! We decided to start with Experiment 19: Making an Anenometer, Experiment 6: Building Your Weather Station, and we also completed Experiment 15: Building a Barometer.
We can’t wait to continue our at home field trip with Ms. Frizzle!
We are going to be on the lookout for the Magic School Bus/ Weather related books next time we are at the library or our local book store:
Using our The Young Scientist Club kit has reminded me how awesome and fun Ms. Frizzle is and inspired me to create more integrative lessons based on the series.
As some of you might know, there are over 200 literature- based activities in my recently published book Educate the Heart: Screen-Free Activities for Grades PreK-6 to Inspire Authentic Learning and several of the activities extend the learning that happens in Magic School Bus books.
I will definitely be sharing more about my experiences with The Young Scientists Club Weather Lab kit on my Instagram, Twitter, and FB soon!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this post. I really hope you found this post worthwhile and hope it inspires you to go on a field trip at home!
Children love when we stop everything and play with them. Why not also help them learn important scientific information? This kit makes it simple!
I definitely recommend this screen-free authentic learning experience from The Young Scientists Club to families and teachers. I will definitely be taking my Weather Lab into my classroom soon!
Yours truly,
Jennifer
